Beverly of Graustark is a wonderful choice for anyone who loves a good romance. George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928) was an American novelist and playwright. McCutcheon became famous for his Graustark series set in Eastern Europe. He disliked being categorized as a romantic and preferred being known for his plays. The Graustark novels are stories of court intrigue, royal disguise, and romance. Novels in the series include Graustark The Story of a Love Behind a Throne (1901), Beverly of Graustark (1904), Truxton King A Story of Graustark (1909), The Prince of Graustark (1914), East of the Setting Sun (1924), and The Inn of the Hawk and Raven (1927). Beverly is a friend of the princess of Graustark who loves an American. Beverly must masquerade as a princess and she does it beautifully. This is a love story in a land, which is just this side of make-believe.

I absolutely adore this novel (I have several antique copies), and I'm kicking myself for not taking the time to read the publisher's description of the novel. FOLKS--- it is 48 pages long. Do NOT buy this "edition". It's a scam. Seriously. I got a pamphlet. No story. No pictures. Nothing of use. Kick. Kick. Kick. So all those glowing reviews??? Good heavens!! Don't be fooled as I was...thinking I'd get a lovely, complete (yes, I was expecting a complete novel) paperback edition of an old, out of print novel. I'm really, really ticked at myself. And, I'm ticked at this publisher. Shame on you. Lesson learned. Look at all the information before purchasing.Product details

Masquerading prince, masquerading princess, a villian you love to hate, derring-do done up in the best of styles. A sequel to the author's GRAUSTARK, set in a mythical Balkan country.
This 100+ year old novel is dated but lot's of fun. Plenty of intrigue, romance, adventure and a surprise ending. Great entertaining, light reading.
Brought back my childhood days reading Beverly of Graustark in the library at my Grandparents house. Re-reading as an adult was just as enjoyable. Good teen-age book.
This book was the reason the name Beverly or Beverley was not used as a man's name after it was printed. I wanted to read it to see why that was the case. It was good but not great.
Written in 1906, the vocabulary, characters and story line are well developed. I came upon this book while researching the meaning of my name. It was a satisfying read.
A VERY UNUSUAL AND ENTERTAINING STORY. HARD TO DESCRIBE . COULDN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW IT WAS GOING TO END. A LOT OF IDENTITY CHANGING. VERY GOOD.
Actually, I stumbled upon this series through another book! While re-reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I had not read since undergraduate school, Betty Smith's main character mentioned reading Beverly from Graustark. I downloaded it to my only to be absolutely delighted with it!! So, after a little research, I found the rest! Truxton King was wonderful, too!! However, I have since learned there is a sequence. So, I am reading Graustark now to put it all in order.
Marvelous reading!!! Each book has adventure, chivalry, romance (different from 19th+ century "romance"), and adventure (said that but worth repeating!).
